Phasing for building egress and removing two 19-ton escalators over a weekend
Operational preparation and organization were key. The overall project took 14 months and midway through we faced the 9/11 terrorist attack. This national crisis posed unique challenges for working in an iconic building and security became paramount. The Pyramid’s lobby had been demolished back to its core and shell, and a complete building security system was incorporated. We also had to dismantle and remove two 19-ton escalators. Each was cut into two-ton sections, raised and lowered via block and tackle, and removed off-site. This was all done in one weekend, including rebuilding the temporary lobbies to be ready for Monday morning. The temporary lobbies were constructed with custom millwork paneling, lighting, HVAC, and included artwork on the walls. We created a comfortable environment for the building tenants and efficient egress to and from the building. We worked above and around people every day and they never knew we were there. We are proud of the end result and to be trusted partners with the Transamerica Pyramid Center.
